Music is at the heart of life and liturgy in our church.

Led by our highly talented Director of Music and Organist, Kelvin Thomson, and supported by a group of experienced and enthusiastic singers, the choir plays an integral part in our worship throughout the Church’s year.

They perform a wide range of sacred music of the last 500 years from Tallis to Rutter. Kelvin has a very varied musical background, including West End theatre, choral societies, as well as teaching A level students locally. A number of members play key roles in the efficient running and development of the choir.

Our soprano Shirley Davison is also the main Junior Church Leader. This connection means the children get an increasing number of chances to sing at All Age and other services, including online. We hope this experience will lead to more young people taking their place in the main choir.

St John’s is fortunate to have a ‘Father’ Willis three manual organ (1896) and a Venables and Son Custom 200 Chamber Grand Piano. These musical resources and the natural acoustics make St John’s a suitable venue for concerts and recitals with several local societies using the church on a regular basis.
